April 28, 2008 · No Comments

28th April; 4am Two passenger trains collided in Zibo town, Shandong province, China. The T195 from Beijing to Qingdao hit the 5034 from Yantai to Xuzhou as one of them came off the rails on a bend hitting the other train. The trains were probably travelling at high speed at the time. Seventy people are reported to have been killed with over 400 taken to hospital many of them in critical condition, among whom is one of the coaches for China’s olympic sailing team.

This is the worst rail accident in China since 1997, a rail worker said. The carriages have rolled down the bank and rescue workers are at the scene including 1500 from Zibo township. A new timetable had been introduced on Monday and this is said to have possible contributed to the crash. Another likely factor was the age and condition of the railway, built in 1897 and due to be retired from passenger use, in favour of a high-speed Beijing - Qingdao built for the Olympic sailing events in Qingdao.

April 21, 2008 · No Comments

MEDIA ≠ TRUTH; BBC CAN MUZZLE OUR VOICE, BUT CAN NOT SMOTHER THE TRUTH; BRITISH FRIENDS PLEASE LISTEN TO DIFFERENT VOICE, etc.

Anti Biased Media Protests in London

19th April 2008. Chinese people in London staged a demonstration in the Old Palace Yard outside the Houses of Parliament and in various cities across the country and Europe, including Birmingham and Manchester against “Biased Media”. The demonstration was peaceful and in particular targeted the BBC, although it is understood that the protest is held against all Western media organisations. Protestors wore dust masks with “BBC” written on them over their mouths. Banners and slogans, such as “BBC stop lying” were to be seen and many protestors wore white shirts with slogans targeting the BBC.

A BBC spokesman said, “Despite restrictions placed on journalists, our coverage of Tibet has been extensive, fair and balanced. The same is true of our reporting of the Olympic Torch relay and the protests that have accompanied it”.

Although sentiments ranged between the various protestors, some clearly pointed out that this protest wasn’t focused exclusively on the coverage of the Olympic Torch or the reporting of unrest in Tibet, but was about a perceived negative bias in reports relating to China in general. However, it was difficult to get a clear consensus because many demonstrators had been instructed not to talk to the press, and protest organisers attempted to keep journalists confined to certain areas.

London Huayu sent two reporters and a photographer down to cover the event. We will be uploading these to this article as soon as they are ready. Please be patient, we are all volunteers and have a life as well.

Interview with William, one of the organisers of the demonstration. Apologies for some quality problems in the middle of the recording. This was due to a technical fault.

Tomorrow - Live Discussion!!!

April 17, 2008 · No Comments

After a long period of inactivity, which was mainly due to, well, lots of things: moving house, project deadline, being tired, fitting out the broadcast studio, we are making a gradual resurgence, and tomorrow we are going to have a live discussion… which will be recorded as well so if you miss it you can listen to that instead (I will change the link to an mp3 link fairly shortly after the show).

Jin Jing with Olympic Torch

The discussion is about how Chinese people feel at the moment regarding the Olympic Torch… can the Olympic Dream for China be restored ? Do Chinese people feel singled out with all this negative press coverage? Is there any danger of a “siege mentality” setting in ? Is the reaction in China the same as in the UK? And more questions for sure…

We *may* put a telephone number on the website if you want to phone in…. but we may not. You can phone in if there is one, and you have something constructive to say. We’re going for the evening around 6pm est. duration about 45 mins.

Listen to the discussion here (Edited version, because it was a very long discussion)

April 8, 2008 · 3 Comments

Sounds and Interviews: Tao and Peter
