19th April 2008. Chinese people in London staged a demonstration in the Old Palace Yard outside the Houses of Parliament and in various cities across the country and Europe, including Birmingham and Manchester against “Biased Media”. The demonstration was peaceful and in particular targeted the BBC, although it is understood that the protest is held against all Western media organisations. Protestors wore dust masks with “BBC” written on them over their mouths. Banners and slogans, such as “BBC stop lying” were to be seen and many protestors wore white shirts with slogans targeting the BBC.
A BBC spokesman said, “Despite restrictions placed on journalists, our coverage of Tibet has been extensive, fair and balanced. The same is true of our reporting of the Olympic Torch relay and the protests that have accompanied it”.
Although sentiments ranged between the various protestors, some clearly pointed out that this protest wasn’t focused exclusively on the coverage of the Olympic Torch or the reporting of unrest in Tibet, but was about a perceived negative bias in reports relating to China in general. However, it was difficult to get a clear consensus because many demonstrators had been instructed not to talk to the press, and protest organisers attempted to keep journalists confined to certain areas.
London Huayu sent two reporters and a photographer down to cover the event. We will be uploading these to this article as soon as they are ready. Please be patient, we are all volunteers and have a life as well.
Interview with William, one of the organisers of the demonstration. Apologies for some quality problems in the middle of the recording. This was due to a technical fault.
Interview with Tong Lin, a Chinese person who came to show his support to the demonstration
