Eve Arnold in China

Eve Arnold (born 1912) was the first female member of the Magnum photo agency. After a decade of making visa applications, she was one of the first Western journalists allowed into China where she spent a total of five months, covering forty thousand miles into the far-flung areas. The timing of her trip was of the essence, marking a period of easing towards the West, after almost a generation of secrecy. She was dazzled by the diversity within the country despite the centrally-directed political atmosphere (which contrasted with her experiences in Russia, which she had felt exhibited a monotonous and grey conformity) and was amazed by the generosity of the access given to her; even allowing her to photograph eminent politicians and representatives of the People’s Congress.

She quotes:
‘Some days the bombardment of the senses was so intense, and the speed at
which we moved so great, that by nightfall it seemed as though my mind had
conjured up the images and that my will had made them real’.
